Christmas Spending in Full Swing, According to 11850 Call Variance Report

Although Ireland is in the midst of a recession, with many cutting their spending on basic necessity items, and with the 2010 Budget looming, it appears the nation is not planning on curbing spending over the Christmas period. Statistics from 11850’s October call variance report suggests that festive spending is already in full swing and may even be up on 2008 figures. Statistics from 11850’s October call variance report suggests that festive spending is already in full swing and may even be up on 2008 figures.

Preparations have begun much earlier this year as requests for numbers for artificial Christmas trees (+73.33%) and Real Christmas tree suppliers (+200%) have increased on October ‘08. A stitch in time saves nine, as eager Grannies are also getting in the mood for Christmas, with increases in requests for Wool Shops (+83.33%) and Knitted Goods (+76.92%). Just when you thought you were getting too old for Granny‚Äôs itchy jumpers with matching mittens!

According to Susan Branchflower, Chief Executive, 11850, “The nation is very organised this year in terms of Christmas present preparations. Number requests for Shopping Centres (+20.01%) and Gift Shops (+11.11%) have both increased on October 2008. Santa has been calling 11850 very often looking for numbers for Toys & Games and Dolls & Accessories, with numbers for these increasing by 8.12% and 75% respectively. A lot of boys and girls must also be thinking about asking Santa for a puppy, as requests for Pet Shops (+44.18%) and Dog Pounds (+73.68%) have increased. But remember, a puppy is not just for Christmas”.

Although many are not scrimping when it comes to presents, savings are being made on other Christmas goodies. Rather than paying high prices for food this Christmas, many appear to be going to the source for their festive foody goods, with requests for Co-operative Shops (+31.25%), Cash & Carry Wholesalers (+35.58%) and Seafood Suppliers (+32.35%) all increasing on last year.

Unsurprisingly, it appears businesses will be cutting back this year on events and gifts, with requests for Function Rooms (-36.19%) and Corporate Gifts (-6.25%) decreasing on October ‘08. However, it also seems that won’t stop employees entering into the Christmas party spirit, DIY style, as requests for Party Equipment Hire have increased by a massive 276% on last year.

This comes as good news for Hairdressers and Beauty Salons, with number requests to book Christmas appointments increasing by 29.61% and 43.79% respectively when compared to October 2008.
